Hello Fresh make home cooking easy by delivering delicious, healthy, easy recipes to your door every week along with all the ingredients you need to cook them perfectly. They have recently launched a new family box which comes with the exact ingredients for four delicious, healthy meals for your family each week – for just £4 per portion. The family box includes the freshest ingredients and simple to follow recipe cards, as well as steps to get your kids in the kitchen.
To celebrate the launch, we were invited to take part in a live cookalong over Halloween with their head chef. Now, what is that saying about never working with animals, children or dodgy wifi signal? Unfortunately, we did have a technical hitch or three but we cooked along with the live video feed anyway and I tried to take as many snaps as I could as we cooked. We had so much fun, not to mention a delicious lunch at the end of it!
I love to cook and I think it’s really important that children learn how too. It’s great to get them involved in the kitchen even from being teeny and many hands (in my case!) certainly make light work. The recipe sheets that come with the family box actually have symbols to show which steps are perfect for getting the children involved which is such a simple but great idea. We made Sicilian caponata with herbed pork and garlic ciabatta for the cookalong and as you can see, we were provided with everything we needed. I have to say that I was seriously impressed with the quality of the ingredients.
There was lots of chopping to be done and the girls made light work of it with a little help from me. The aubergine and peppers were cut into bite sized chunks using a dinner knife so no risk of chopping each others fingers off! In all seriousness though, using a knife is such an important kitchen skill and one that can be learnt with just a little time and supervision. In a bowl, they then coated the vegetables in olive oil before spreading them on a tray to bake in the oven. My girls loved getting their hands messy for this bit!
While the aubergine and peppers roasted away in the oven, we sliced open the sausage, discarding the skin and adding the meat to a hot pan along with the shallot. Then the tomatoes and the rest of the ingredients for the sauce were added and we let it simmer for a good ten minutes as it thickened up. Once the vegetables were done, they were added to the pan and stirred in. We then cut the ciabatta in half and toasted until golden brown before rubbing with a clove of garlic and drizzling with a little olive oil.
Once the caponata had thickened up nicely, we served in bowls with the ciabatta and it was absolutely delicious! Clean bowls all round! I can’t help but think that children are much keener on eating all their dinner up when they have helped to cook it, don’t you agree? They really enjoyed helping me in the kitchen then it was lovely to then all sit down to eat together. The recipe was easy to follow and there were plenty of steps that they could help out with. I don’t know which bit they enjoyed more, the cooking or the eating! They were really proud of their little selves for creating this ‘real’ meal.
As well as taking part in the Hello Fresh cookalong, we were also provided with a family recipe box to try out for the week. It arrived perfectly packaged and included everything we needed to cook four family meals. The quality of all the ingredients is superb and it really does include everything you need right down to the correct number of cloves of garlic. There is absolutely no waste. I found all of the recipes really quick and easy to follow and they were really good, healthy, family meals. Again, there were steps in each recipe that the children could help out with too. I could get used to all of this help in the kitchen, it’s a lovely way to spend time together!
I love to cook but even I sometimes to struggle to think up interesting meal ideas week in week out to feed my family and that’s where I think Hello Fresh can help. It is a flexible subscription service so if you didn’t want to use it every single week then that’s fine, you could maybe choose to use it for those busy weeks where you need all the help you can get or perhaps just when you are fresh out of ideas of what to eat. I found the portion sizes to be extremely generous so I think the price of £4 per person is very reasonable, especially given the high quality ingredients. But you are paying for much more than just the food of course, for that price you are also getting to try out new healthy recipes each week delivered to your door plus the convenience of somebody else deciding what is for dinner for a change! Now that is priceless to me!
I really enjoyed cooking with Hello Fresh and will definitely be using the service again. I honestly can’t recommend it enough for busy families like mine it really does make home cooking easy. Not only do they offer the family box we tried though, but also a classic box with 3 or 5 recipes for 2, 3 or 4 people; or they also have a veggie box with 3 recipes for 2-4 people. All the recipes in the boxes can be made in 30 minutes or under and include all the fresh ingredients you need on a flexible subscription service.
