The one with the spruce up

At the end of each year, WordPress send you a nifty little report telling you how many visitors you’ve had to your blog that year and the most popular posts and so on and so forth. It’s quite nice really because it’s not something that I would think to look up for myself and it’s quite nice to stop and take stock every now and then.

For the upteenth year in a row, my recipe for this lemon drizzle cake was my most popular post of 2015. If I was a better blogger, I’m sure I would find a way to jump on that fact and come up with equally amazing recipes year in year out. Week in, week out even! Because it really is the best lemon drizzle cake ever! But I guess some things just stand the test of time and it makes me quite proud that people love one of my recipes so much. (Saying that, my popcorn cheesecake recipe last year almost pipped it to the post. Not surprisingly, that was a huge hit for my blog too!) But I thought it only seemed right to give my much loved lemon drizzle recipe a bit of a spruce up. Same old recipe of course but the photos were looking a little tired and in need of a little refresh. And hey, what a great excuse to make a cake! So a spruce up it got.

That got me thinking though that maybe my blog was looking a little tired full stop. I tried to work out when it last had an overhaul and I lost count of the years. I think it might have been in 2011 as I’m sure I had it done in celebration of a whole year of blogging? And as much as I loved my old skool style blog, maybe it was time for a change. I’m not actually the most technical of people so it was a big step for me to tinker away behind the scenes but I actually surprised myself. Maybe I’m not as much as a dunce as I thought!

I had grand plans of something much slicker. All fresh colours and clean lines. And it started out that way. Then I thought I might add a little bit of pink to cheer up the white and grey theme that had emerged. But an afternoon of twiddling later, it somehow ended up being really quite flowery again. And the old style sidebar was back although I did rejig the widgety bits and have new social media buttons at last. So other than a different shade of pink and a new kind of flowery wallpaper, I don’t suppose it looks that different to anyone else but I love it! And that’s what counts!

Like me, I don’t think my blog is meant to be glossy and slick. I’m never going to be that mummy in the playground who never has a hair out of place, I’m more likely to have a banana stain on my jeans and chipped nail varnish. My house is never going to be immaculate, the dishwasher nearly always needs emptying and there will always be Lego on the floor. My blog is (and no doubt will always be) a hotchpotch of family life sharing bits of everything I love. And I really rather like it that way. Flowery bits and all.

It looks lovely! You’re definitely my kind of blogger – recipes, books, family are my favourite things, and fave things to read about. I suspect you are far more pulled together than you give yourself credit for, though. I am in constant admiration that you always have nail varnish on!

The blog looks great! We don’t want it to be corporate and slick, we want it to be human and welcoming, exactly how it is.
The only thing missing is a button that we can press to have some of that lemon drizzle cake hand-delivered, with a cup of tea, possibly with a foot massage and a blow dry 🙂
