I’ve never had a desk, I just worked from wherever I plonked myself to be honest. Sometimes from the kitchen table, often from the living room. I’d sometimes sit on a different sofa, you know, just to jazz things up a little. I’d have my laptop perched on my knee, a notebook by my side and a cup of tea usually just out of reach going cold. And it never felt like a problem. In fact, I quite liked that I could move around to wherever suited me that day. When you have as many children as I do, grabbing space for yourself never really seems like an option. We certainly don’t have a spare room that could be my dedicated office. Our spare rooms tend to get filled with children. But when Kit Out My Office got in touch asking if I would like to review a desk, it immediately made me think how wonderful it would be to have a little space of my own. I had no idea where on earth I would put this new desk but I knew that I would find room for it somehow.
I toyed with the idea of having it downstairs, we have a little nook in both the kitchen and living room where it could go. But in the end I decided that I would quite like to be tucked away in a corner of our bedroom for now. I usually write while the children are at school but my teenagers tend to come and go throughout the day so I thought being upstairs out of the way would mean less interruptions. It feels quite strange to be thinking of myself for once but I think I could get used to it! Ha!
Kit Out My Office do a great range of desks in all sorts of shapes, sizes and finishes. In the end I chose the Aspire Desk as I thought that it best suited my needs plus the smaller 800mm length would mean that it would fit easily elsewhere if I changed my mind about having it in my bedroom. We are really lucky to have a huge bedroom and this desk doesn’t even make a dent in it! Which makes me think why oh why didn’t I do this sooner?! Anyway, the desk arrived flatpacked and I set to work putting it together which was an absolute breeze. It is really well made and the instructions were simple enough even for me. The desk was built in something silly like thirty minutes I couldn’t actually believe just how simple it was to say that it was so sturdy!
I can’t tell you just how much I love having my own desk. It is funny how having a dedicated place to work really focuses your mind too. For the first time ever I feel like I am actually taking my writing seriously. Oh and of course it also means that I can faff around with pretty things like pencil pots and smelly candles. And I now have a reason to actually buy all of that stationery that I usually just stroke in the shop! I love the way the desk looks too with the A shaped legs and streamlined drawer. Not only is it functional but it looks great too which really does matter to me. Design is everything.
The desktop is a really great size. More than enough space for my laptop to sit comfortably alongside things like the books I am reading, my diary and notebooks. It’s so nice just to have everything in one place for the first time. Just silly things like having pens to hand has made all the difference! The huge drawer runs the full depth of the desk too which is perfect for storing away chargers and spare notebooks but I can also fit all of my Sketchbook Club things in there too (plus a secret supply of jelly babies – don’t tell!) Mr Mostly helped me put up the gallery above my desk which I absolutely love. It really does feel like my own little space I can’t stop grinning!
Kit Out My Office are a new family run company and like me, are based in West Yorkshire. They make all of their furniture themselves in their factory and are FSA approved so are environmentally conscious too. They have a great range of desks and office furniture for business or home and are the loveliest bunch of people. It was such a pleasure to work with them on this post! The UCLIC Aspire desk with a single drawer is available in 800mm or 1200mm widths and comes in 16 colour options with prices starting at £144 for this model.
