Denim dress – Warehouse, bracelet – c/o X by Trollbeads, black opaques – Wolford, Spiral Jalouse ankle boots – Ash
The denim dress. What could be simpler? My two loves of denim and dresses rolled into one simple outfit. But it wasn’t until I came to buy a denim dress that I realised that there was nothing simple about it. Too long, too short. Too young, too old. Too cool, too frumpy. I was beginning to feel like Goldilocks and had all but given up hope of finding one that was right for me.
I found lots of denim shirt type dresses and I tried a lovely one on in TopShop. Well, it looked lovely on the hanger but on me it looked like I had forgotten to put my trousers on. Seriously. Then I found another in H&M that looked like more of a dress than a shirt and I thought I had stuck gold until I tried it on. I don’t know if it was the fit of the dress or my winter insulation but if I so much as breathed, I bulged out of the button fastenings that ran down the front. Not a good look. So I decided that what I actually needed was a plain denim shift style dress and went on a bit of a wild goose chase looking for one. Most that I found were too short or not quite denimy enough. And yes, that is a thing. I’d all but given up hope of finding one until I stumbled across this Warehouse beauty over on My Fashionable 40’s blog. This was the dress. This was the perfect denim dress.
It is made from proper denim. Like heavyweight-not-much-give-proper-denim which was just what I wanted. I am normally a size 10 /12 depending on the fit of a dress and I had to size up to a 12 with this as I found it quite slim fitting on the shoulders. Saying that, I don’t think it is necessarily a small fitting dress, I just think I have quite broad shoulders. The three quarter length sleeves can be rolled up or down making it perfect for now but it will see me right into spring (and summer too if the weather is anything like last years!) It’s not too long to feel frumpy and not too short to feel like mutton. And best of all it has pockets. Two of them! This really is my dream denim dress!
Have you been a fashion wild goose chase lately? Please tell me it’s not just me who is so fussy? Not being quite denimy enough is so a thing. Ahem.
