Sage by Heston Blumenthal Scraper Mixer Pro up for review

We love to bake. I mean, really love to bake. So when Sage by Heston Blumenthal got in touch asking if we would like to put the new Scraper Mixer Pro to the test, I may have squealed with delight. Oh who am I kidding, there is no may about it! I only had an ancient little hand mixer before so I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to go from that to this huge beast of a stand mixer. I suddenly felt like a ‘real’ baker and quickly set about baking all of the cakes! Any excuse of course but what better one than playing with my new toy?

Now the Scraper Mixer Pro is no ordinary mixer (as you might expect with Heston Blumenthal being behind it!) Everybody knows that great cakes start with perfectly creamed butter but of course butter can stick to the bowl hiding lumpy bits of sugar. With a normal mixer, this would mean that you constantly have to wipe the bowl as you mix so you don’t miss those bits but the Scraper Mix Pro has a windscreen wiper to scrape the bowl as it mixes. That’s right, a windscreen wiper. How clever is that? The special paddle scrapes the bowl so you don’t have to! The flexible edge scrapes the bowl as it mixes for thoroughly mixed ingredients which in turn can also cut mixing time by up to 60%. It actually works up to three times faster than ordinary beaters so it traps more air, making lighter fluffier cakes.

As well as the super duper Scraper Beater, there is also a traditional style Flat Beater, Wire Whisk and Dough Hook included. The Scraper Mixer Pro actually replicates a similar motion used by commercial mixers. Sage’s planetary mixing action produces evenly mixed batter, creamy icing and pliable dough every time. The planetary mixing action enables 360 degree coverage of the mixing bowl. this is achieved by the counter clockwise motion of the mixer head combined with the clockwise sweep of the beater and extra wide attachments. This kind of geekery fascinates me probably much more than it should! But the proof of the pudding is certainly within the eating and never more so than with the Scraper Mixer Pro of course! Ha!

I can’t take my eyes off the Scraper Beater when it is in action, it really is mesmerising to watch it beat away at the ingredients leaving a clean bowl. Such a clever bit of kit. It is a fantastic all round mixer though and with an electronic speed control and countdown timer, it is a doddle to use. It was great the kids could use it with me too. I loved that the mixing guides are actually on the mixer itself so you’re not hunting down the instruction booklet every time you come to use it, it is all there to see in an instant. It makes baking an absolute breeze. And our cakes? Well, quite frankly they have never tasted so good. And we have never baked so many. I LOVE IT!

The Sage by Heston Blumenthal Scraper Mixer Pro is £299.99 RRP and you can read more about it here. For me of course, going from a wooden spoon and a bit of elbow grease to this has been quite the leap but one that I can’t recommend enough. I can’t believe what a difference it has made to our cakes (as well as looking rather swish on my kitchen counter of course – it’s a gorgeous looking thing it has to be said!) It really is a powerful bit of kit and having had it for a good month or so, I already don’t know how I ever lived without it. Butterfly bun anyone..?
