Play-Doh is always a huge hit with my youngest two it always has been since they were tots. Even at nine and eleven they are still big fans so we couldn’t wait to put the new Play-Doh TOUCH Shape To Life Studio to the test. We’ve had lots of Play-Doh sets over the years but none quite like this. You see, thanks to a fancy app you can bring your creations to life.

Inside the box you will find the Shape To Life Studio itself, seven pots of different coloured Play-Doh, 19 cutters and tools for snipping, cutting, rolling and all sorts of shapes, plus ten special digital stampers to create characters and actions. Before getting started, you need to download the Play-Doh Touch app on your device from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

You start your adventure by creating a character using the digital stampers. They are really easy to use you just use the roller tool provided to flatten the Play-Doh then press the stamper in quite firmly making sure to trim the edges with the cutter. You then carefully remove the creation from the stamper and place it on to the studio. You need to keep the outline of the character in tact so the app can recognise it but they really are nice and chunky shapes so even the clumsiest of fingers could manage it.

Now to bring your creation to life you need to make sure that it is in the centre of the studio. You can use the white Play-Doh compound to make eyes and other small details. Natural lighting is ideal but bright lights without shadows are a must. you simply open up the app on your device then hold it horizontally above the creation and it will scan automatically once it is recognised. It was quite tricky to capture a photograph of the app in action as it scans really quickly and easily. You can only scan one creation at a time but once they have scanned, they will be saved in your world so you can go on to add more.

You can apply fun effects to your creations with the action stampers and explore what happens when you use different colours. Each digital character unlocks a unique world and you can add different characters or things like trees and house using the cutter shapes or make them do crazy things like fly or ride a skateboard. You can create whole worlds of adventure with all of your creations it is brilliant.

I must admit that when I first read about the set I did wonder if it might be a bit gimicky and I thought they might just model with the Play-Doh without bothering with the app but I can honestly say that I was completely and utterly wrong! They absolutely LOVE the app and actually fight over taking turns. The app is so easy to use and it is so instant. Within a flash your creation is right there on the screen coming to life within your own little world.

You can save your creations too meaning that they are still there on your device long after the Play-Doh has been cleared away. I quite like the idea of an old skool toy like Play-Doh being brought right up to date thanks to this clever little app. I love that my children still get to use their imaginations to create these amazing Play-Doh characters then thanks to the studio, they can have fun making up adventures through the app. It feels like the best of both worlds!
