This year a new range of large Lalaloopsy* dolls based on the Netflix animated series have been launched and for the first time ever, they have real hair. You might remember our review of the rocking Storm E. Sky back in the summer? Well, our lovely pals over at Lalaloopsy have now sent us this amazing new Glitter Makeover doll to review too!

Lalaloopsy were once rag dolls who magically came to life when their last stitch was sewn. This new Jewel Sparkles doll is the princess and expert of all things fashionable and glittery and you can give her a glitter makeover of her own.

This doll comes complete with all sorts of makeover accessories including hair chalk, clips, brush and a glitter blow dryer. She is wearing a fancy dress and her outfit in completed with matching shoes and a tiara. As you can see, she is one of the large sized dolls and has real hair that can be styled with the brush and clips.

Jewel Sparkles has bright pink hair but with a stroke of the hair chalk, you can make it purple. It is really easy to use. The special chalk clips on to the little wand and you pull it through the hair. You can use it on your own hair too as it washes out with shampoo. My daughter has very dark brown hair so the effect was very subtle, I should think that it would be much brighter on lighter hair, but she thought it was the coolest thing ever to have purple streaks in her hair!

To add glitter to the Lalaloopsy’s hair you first need to fill the water spray bottle and lightly mist over her hair. Then you pour the glitter into the blow dryer but be careful not to overfill it. A little bit goes a long way we found! Then repeatedly pull the level on the glitter blow dryer quite close to the hair and out it comes. The glittery makeover is complete!

Now I have to say that I thought this doll would be really messy and I had visions of hair chalk and glitter everywhere. But actually it’s not that messy at all, or at least the mess is quite contained and easily cleaned up. The chalk brushes through the hair and can be shampooed clean so not very messy at all.

As for the glitter, that causes a little more mess but nothing that can’t be wiped or vacuumed away. The glitter sticks to the wet hair and we found that it stays stuck until it is washed out but obviously it can come off during play as it is only temporary. The blow dryer means that some of the glitter might fly around when you are creating the style but as long as you don’t put too much in to start with and keep it quite close to the hair as you blow the glitter out, it is easily tidied away.

Lalaloopsy Jewel’s Glitter Makeover doll was a huge hit with my daughter. She loved styling her hair and especially loved the glitter blow dryer. I love that the doll encourages not only imaginative play but is creative too, it really kept her interest. Priced at around £35 I think it is good value for a doll that does so much and it would make a great addition to any Lalaloopsy collection or indeed would be a great doll to start with. It is recommended for ages 4+ and is available in all good toy shops now.
