When I was a little girl, opening your advent calendar and finding a picture of a robin was about as exciting as it got. A picture. Seriously. How things have changed, eh? I have to say that chocolate calendars are a favourite here because who doesn’t want chocolate for breakfast? And I include myself in that. But even better are the all new singing and dancing advent calendars, forget your robin pictures of yesteryear and your piddly chocolates, I am talking about LEGO advent calendars of course. We were very lucky to be sent a LEGO Star Wars™ theme calendar this year and to say that the girls were over the moon is an understatement!
This year sees LEGO launch a sustainable advent calendar which aims to save around a million plastic trays from landfills. The sustainable calendars are available in three themes – LEGO City, LEGO Friends and the LEGO Star Wars™ that we were sent. Containing a different LEGO toy to build each day, the trays are made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified paper and can be recycled along with the box.
The empty trays can also be used for a whole host of arts and craft ideas. You can use them to create a Christmas scene or even fill them with soil to grow plants. Just click through and take a look at this video to see some of the cool ideas you could try.
All the green points for LEGO of course for creating these sustainable calendars but I must admit that as somebody whose children were always more interested in the boxes than the presents when they were little, this really made me smile. I rather like the idea of them creating something from their LEGO box while I wrestle with the turkey come Christmas Eve.
Well done LEGO!
