January is upon us which means that chocolate coins are no longer an acceptable breakfast much to the disappointment of my children. And me too to be fair. So when the lovely people at Jim Jams* got in touch asking if we would like to try out their chocolate spreads, it felt like the perfect time to think about swapping from our usual choice of Nutella and giving this a try.
We were sent two spreads to try – Milk Chocolate and Hazelnut Chocolate and each contain 83% less sugar than Nutella. I have to admit that I was stunned by that figure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very much of the ‘everything in moderation’ school of thought when it comes to feeding my family but 83% less sugar? That’s staggering! Jim Jams was set up by mother of two Kellie Bath who was shocked at the amount of sugar her children were consuming when eating Nutella (there are 57 sugar cubes in every jar!) and together with her husband, Kevin, decided to do something about it.
Jim Jams contain a naturally extracted sweetener called Maltitol which has half the calories of sugar and is kinder on teeth. (It is also diabetic friendly and gluten-free!) I think it’s fair to say that sugar is a pretty hot topic these days. Lots of parents are concerned by just how much sugar their children are eating and it can be hard to find healthier alternatives but with 8.7% of sugar per 100g compared to 56.3% for Nutella, I think it is safe to say that Jim Jams have found the solution.
Now of course what you really want to know is how it tastes, right? Less sugar is all well and good but does it pass the taste test? In a word… YES! I thought less sugar would mean a compromise in taste but I can honestly say that I prefer the Hazelnut Chocolate spread to Nutella. For me it has a much more grown-up hazelnut flavour without being sickly and no horrible aftertaste. I could honestly eat it straight from the jar with a spoon but I won’t because that would be very, very wrong *cough*
Both the Milk Chocolate and Hazelnut Chocolate spreads were a huge hit with the kids. They were smooth and creamy and perfect to spread on bread, pancakes or the like. They can normally detect a healthy food swap at a hundred paces but these two yummy spreads passed their taste test with flying colours so it’s win win all round. I’m happy that they are eating less sugar and they are happy to have chocolate spread on their morning toast (the chocolate coins of December are long forgotten!) And of course I am happy to share it with them. Jim Jams is definitely not just for children! Ha!
